I’ve been interviewing people for a long time. Sometimes it’s worse than pulling teeth trying to get the talent to open up and offer the slightest usable soundbyte or impactful thought that will carry the weight of a production.

Then there are the unicorns, where almost everything said is clippable and urgent for the structure of a story. They seem to answer every question before it’s asked, almost like they’ve been spying on the pre-pro or using telepathy to anticipate the next thought.

Krista was a unicorn.

I could easily just export our entire conversation, slap some titles at the beginning and end, and release it as the documentary.

She’s one of my dearest friends, and I wanted to interview her for a few reasons. Krista is a brilliant counselor. She’s done an immense amount of work with teen-aged girls with her organization Girl Above which has impacted her work now through Set Your Mind counseling. On top of that, we’ve known each other for a very long time and she knows a lot of my story, so her perspective is something I truly cherish in my life.

We were probably 60 minutes into the conversation, my back was urging me to be rid of the hunched position I was in while trying to keep eyeline and stay out of the A-cam shot, and I asked her one of my final questions I tend to end every interview with: “is there anything we haven’t talked about that you wish dads would know?”

Her response (in the clip above) inspired and convicted me immediately.

I’m maybe a little humbled and embarrassed to say, but I’ve never thought of how my gifts and skills can actually impact at home. I’ve never really dug into the thought of how I can utilize the creative stuff I care about to lead my household and enrich my family’s life - it really has felt more like those are things I enact at work or on set, and when I’m home it’s more reactionary to the moment.

Since our conversation I’ve been thinking of ways that I can bring my love for creative closer to the family, and I wanted to share what she had to say so maybe it might inspire you as well.

2. PRODUCTION UPDATE

I’m about 7 or so weeks into production, which is a crazy thing to say since it was caught in the “what if” twilight zone of my mind for so many years.

I’ve completed 2 of the 3 interviews of people that I wanted to be a part of this project, almost a terabyte of biking footage and insitu ramblings, and a few other "special” content-aspects of the final cut that I’ll keep hidden in my back pocket for now. What’s next?

November I hope to have the final interview filmed which is kind-of the lynchpin to the final push of footage that I need to grab - most of it revolving around me and my to-camera sections.

I’m a 90s kid, through and through. A lot of the style of this doc will hopefully exhibit my love for my come up, and maybe you’ve noticed a bit of that with the titling on the other emails.

This weekend I found my dad’s old 8mm camcorder. I took it from him about 9 years ago to use on a creative project that never got out of idea-land, and it’s sat in a bag in a box in a forgotten spot in all of our homes since, until now.

I feel a special spark of nostalgia, and to be blunt, I’m a whore for nostalgia. Expect more 8mm footage. Above is a screengrab of me trying to see if the thing was working. Hallelujah, ‘tis.

Here are some prayers (if you’re the praying kind) you can keep for me - or the good vibes you can send my way for what’s next on my agenda:

1. This is all self funded, self produced, self everythinged, and I’m riding the expense wave to time when I can purchase necessary software or equipment to finish what needs finishing. The company I worked for sold to another company 2 weeks ago, so I’m no longer employed (I got a little severance and some savings so we’re not dead in the water!) which might impact when I can do the rest of what I need to do. If you know any sugardaddies that want to front me 6-9 months of living + production expenses because they believe in impactful art, and don’t want to put fingers in any pies, please send them my way. Otherwise, pray for provision when necessary.
   

2. Schedules need to align for some of this last bit of production to go smoothly.
   

3. With my job situation, I’m just looking for direction and wisdom for what’s next. What a weird last 5 years of employment it’s been for me, and I’m looking to figure out how to accomplish what I feel like is prudent. I journaled today that I’ve been pursuing a lot of wants and desires over my young-adult to adult life, and I’m ready for the wisdom to pursue what is needed instead.
