never split the difference
TLDR: Jedi mind tricks on how to negotiate. I sucked at negotiating - still do. But trying to implement these tactics as often as possible.
Chris Voss A)has the silkiest voice out there, B) gives you a great inside look on what kinds of tactics you can implement to negotiate with folks.
There are probably a TON of negotiation books out there. I haven’t read them, I’ve read this one, but I bet the tactics are similar.
What Chris does is break them down in a way that seems like a mission. He gives a very in-depth sort of look at how these techniques can be used in all sorts of places.
He draws on his experience as a hostage negotiator, so there are some pretty intense stories in here - and he also draws those experiences into the real world.
Look, I’m seriously bad at this stuff. I grabbed this book because I wanted to understand how to talk to people I disagreed with BETTER. I had a few bosses that were incredibly hard to deal with, and I was hoping this book would give me the resources necessary to help in those situations. Did it? Yeah, for sure. There are some things I’ve used to try and move through sticky conversations.
The hardest part is implementing and practicing these things. Without a coach or someone guiding you through this stuff, you’re kinda on your own. Nonetheless, technique is very important to me and this book delivers on that.
Get it, but give yourself time to really read into it and try the stuff out.
